PETALING JAYA: Umno veteran Noh Omar has denied news reports claiming that he and fellow party leader Nazri Aziz attacked former prime minister Najib Razak over a suggestion to work with Anwar Ibrahim.
In a Facebook post, the Tanjong Karang MP said he was “shocked” over the reports making such claims.
“What was written is not true. Yes, I attended the (Umno MPs) meeting but I did not attack Najib. I only gave my views and Nazri did not attend.”
This, he said, showed the reports were “not true at all”.
Nazri had also denied the reports, saying he was in Kelantan the whole time and did not attend the meeting.
“It is a lie. I wasn’t even there. I will go with whatever the party decides,” he told FMT.
Yesterday, Najib, the former Umno president, said his proposal for the party to work with PKR president Anwar was an option it could consider if his first preference, for a snap general election, was rejected by the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
The proposal to work with Anwar, he said, would be on the condition the former deputy prime minister did not include DAP.
Najib said he was also open to continuing Umno support for the PN government until the next general election, but on condition Umno and Barisan Nasional are given significant roles, especially over the economy.
The meeting of Umno MPs, which was followed by an Umno Supreme Council meeting, came amid strained ties between the party and PN linchpin PPBM.
The supreme council meeting ended with Umno saying they will continue to back the PN-led administration and not work with PKR and DAP to form a new government.
