Govt beefs up Sabah border security amid surge in Covid-19 cases

Hamzah Zainudin says the home affairs ministry will monitor developments at all hotspots.

PETALING JAYA: Home Affairs Minister Hamzah Zainudin has instructed that more security personnel be mobilised to secure Sabah’s borders from encroachments by undocumented migrants.

In a statement, Hamzah said the ministry viewed the surge in Covid-19 cases in the state seriously.

“As such, the agencies under the ministry, namely the police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), Malaysia Border Control Agency and the Immigration Department, have been instructed to further tighten land and sea border controls in Sabah from encroachments,” he said.

This included increasing the number of personnel and operations which are part of the Op Benteng to prevent undocumented migrants who may be infected with Covid-19 from entering the country.

“The ministry will continue to monitor developments at all hotspots which are landing points or smuggling routes used by undocumented migrants to enter into the country,” he said.

Sabah, which has seen a surge of cases and clusters in recent weeks, recorded 118 cases yesterday. The authorities have put in place a ban on travel between districts from midnight tomorrow to Oct 16.

A targeted movement control order (TEMCO) was also imposed in badly affected districts Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau on Sept 27.
