Kick into gear with a Kopi Banana Smoothie

Kopi Banana Smoothie: A little caffeine kick to get going. (Butterkicap pic)

This Kopi Banana Smoothie is perfect to create a little morning buzz, and it is packed with nutrients. Banana is a great source of potassium and vitamins and is low in fat and calories.

Dates are chockful of vitamins, calcium, fibre, magnesium and potassium and they have great anti-inflammatory benefits. However, dates are 80% sugar making them unsuitable for diabetics.

Milk is good for the bones because it’s a great source of calcium and Vitamin D.

The potassium can help reduce blood pressure while the vitamin D helps to produce serotonin, which helps to lift the mood.

Vegans or those who are lactose intolerant can swap out the mild for a soy or nut-based milk, or any other milk that suits one’s fancy.

The caffeine in the kopi can give a 45-minute mental boost as well as an energy boost for a workout.

It can also help reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, lower the risk of diabetes and even mouth and throat cancer. The kopi can be pre-made and frozen into cubes for the extra chill factor.

Get all ingredients ready before bringing out the frozen banana and chilled milk or they will warm up and spoil the smoothie. (Butterkicap pic)

Ingredients

  • 100 g (1) frozen banana
  • 1 teaspoon kopi powder steeped in 60 ml hot water and then cooled
  • 10g (1) pitted date
  • 120 ml milk

Method

  • Place frozen banana, date and steeped, cooled kopi in a high-powered blender. Pour the kopi through a sieve to remove leftover coffee powder.
  • Blend until smooth, add milk and blend until thoroughly combined.
  • Serve immediately while still cold.

Tips

  • Get all ingredients ready before bringing out the frozen banana and chilled milk or they will warm up.
  • Temperature is key to making delicious smoothies – it must be cold. Add a little ice or use frozen kopi cubes to keep it cold during the blending process. Or serve the smoothie in a cup or glass with ice to keep it cool.
  • Dates vary in sweetness. Adjust the quantity as needed. If the banana is very sweet and ripe, the dates can be left out.
  • Local kopi powder can be swapped with espresso or coffee powder.
  • Put the hardest ingredients at the bottom of the blender so they are closest to the blades. The kopi liquid helps smoothen the blending process.
  • A high-powered blender is faster, ensuring the smoothie remains cold. However, not everyone can afford to fork out a pretty penny for one of those blenders. The Philips ProBlend 5 is a pretty good option for ice as well as non-ice-based smoothies.
