The lavender and strawberry farms of Genting Highlands

The sight of the beautiful flowers at the Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm will truly take one’s breath away.

PETALING JAYA: With overseas travel halted, Malaysians have taken the opportunity to “cuti-cuti Malaysia” and discover some hidden gems right in their own backyard.

And for those in the Klang Valley, there’s no need to travel to Cameron Highlands for bouquets of fresh flowers or juicy fruit. Genting Highlands has its own lavender and strawberry farms to take your breath away. Yup, looks like it’s not just Cameron Highlands that’s hogging all the strawberry glory.

Strategically located just before Genting Premium Outlets, there’s no missing this sweet attraction with its giant smiling strawberry statue beckoning visitors to come on over.

The entrance of Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms.

Known as Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms, this tourist attraction offers more than just strawberries, it also has a large lavender farm and other varieties of flowers.

Not to worry, parking is plentiful and, most importantly, free since the entrance fee has taken a price hike at RM15 per visitor.

Just after the entrance gate lies a sea of purple, red and yellow flowers planted to the left and right.

There are many Instagram-worthy shots here with the lavender in full bloom all around.

One of the most picturesque features is the lavender garden, which has unique fountains surrounded by blooming lavender flowers. Rose enthusiasts should also keep an eye out for the rose bushes sprouting up all over the farm.

The highlight here is strawberry picking, which had unfortunately been put on hold, possibly due to the SOPs under the Recovery Movement Control Order.

There was also a noticeable lack of mature strawberries on the plants as most were still in the sprouting and unripe phase, which could also explain why the activity was cancelled – or put on hold.

Not to worry, visitors can instead opt to buy the packaged strawberries sold at the farm. But do double check with the sales attendant to make sure of the flavour as not everyone likes sour strawberries, most like them a little sweet.

There are also strawberry jams, lollies and other appealing strawberry-based delights on sale to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Lavender lotions and other lavender-based products are also available for sale and make great gifts to take back home to family and friends.

Stop and smell the lavenders! Visitors can take their sweet time smelling and appreciating the beautiful flowers all around them.

At the end of the walk, a strawberry-themed restaurant with a rather tempting chocolate fountain and a strawberry soft-serve machine await. What better way to finish a trip to a strawberry farm than indulging in a creamy, cold dessert bursting with fresh, strawberry flavour?

Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms also used to grow a wide range of mushrooms but, unfortunately, there was no sign of them now, only flowers and strawberries. All that’s left is the occasional lone mushroom growing on a tree.

There are also decorations hanging from the ceiling of the restaurant so visitors can take photographs but truth be told, they looked rather worn out and faded.

There is a beautiful strawberry fountain at the entrance to the farm.

Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms is the perfect place for those who love spending some quiet time in gardens and among flowers, but it can get crowded since interstate travel is now permitted. So practising social distancing is a must. And always wear your face mask.

It is a great place to take the children to learn all about flowers and run off some of that excess energy after being cooped up at home for so long.
