3 considerations when cleaning the air conditioner

For many Malaysians, air conditioning has become a necessity to combat the heat.

But once the unit has been installed, many people tend to run the air conditioner without a thought to maintenance, until it reaches its breaking point and repairs are required.

But with proper cleaning, the need for repairs is reduced and the lifespan of the unit increases.

There are two main methods to clean an air conditioner – chemical cleaning or overhaul cleaning.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing which to use.

1. The interval between servicing

If it has been more than a year since the air conditioner was cleaned and serviced, an overhaul clean is indicated.

Chemical cleaning does not require the disassembly of the entire unit and uses a water bag technology. It only requires opening up the cover and filters and spraying a chemical.

An overhaul cleaning means the unit is disassembled and each component is given a thorough clean before it is reassembled.

The longer the air conditioner is left unserviced, the more dust, mould and allergens will accumulate.

2. The placement of the air conditioner

If the unit is placed in the kitchen, the greasier it will become. The oil particles trap dust and allergens, making the unit less efficient.

It is recommended to service an air conditioner once in three months but if more than six months have passed, an overhaul cleaning might be in order due to the number of particles that get sucked into the unit, making it harder to clean.

3. The number of pets

The number of pets in the home means more fur caught in the air conditioner.

It is recommended to service the unit once in three months to keep it running efficiently and to prevent it from blowing out dust, allergens and fur.

If it has been more than a year since the last service, it is probably time for a more thorough overhaul clean.

However, if one is unsure which type of cleaning to go for, seek the advice of an expert – from Kaodim, for example.
