Cooking is fun, but cleaning up afterwards can be a real chore, especially the stubborn stains that won’t budge with even the strongest cleaners.

Here are a few cleaning hacks, using everyday ingredients just lying around the kitchen, to lighten the task.

1. Burnt pans: Baking soda and vinegar

Everyone burns food occasionally and getting rid of the tough stains can be a nightmare. Scrubbing it for an hour may work, eventually, but it is not the most effective way.

A simple combination of water, baking soda and vinegar will do the trick with much less work.

Put one cup of water and a cup of vinegar in the pan and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and add two tablespoons of baking soda.

The baking soda will start to fizz and when it stops, empty the pan and clean it with a sponge.

For more obstinate spots, put baking soda on the stained area and scrub. Rinse the pan with water.

2. Dirty microwave oven: Lemons

All that is needed to make sure the microwave oven is nice and clean is a microwave-safe bowl, some lemons, water and a cloth.

Put half a cup of water into the bowl. Slice the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the bowl, adding the lemon halves afterwards.

Microwave this on high for three minutes and then let the bowl sit for five minutes to steam and loosen the food gunk.

Wipe the microwave oven from top to bottom with the cloth. For stubborn stains, dip the cloth in the lemon water and wipe.

3. Smelly sink: Lemon and baking soda

A smelly kitchen sink is easily sorted with hot water, baking soda and lemon juice.

Boil a cup of water and pour it down the drain. Then, slowly pour a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by the juice from one lemon, and allow it to fizz.

When it stops, run the water to rinse. Do this once a month to keep the sink smelling sweet. If the odour persists, get it checked by a plumber.
