Salted Gula Melaka popcorn – what’s there not to like?

Whether you’re planning a movie night in with the family or celebrating a kid’s birthday, popcorn with Gula Melaka and a tinge of salt makes for a memorable snack with a delicious local twist.

Using pantry staples, all that’s left is actually venturing outside to buy the corn.

Then it’s back to the kitchen and in under 10 minutes, you’ll have a batch of delicious popcorn adults and kids will love to bits.

Ingredients

  • 300 g popcorn kernels
  • 200 g butter, melted
  • 50 g gula Melaka, grated
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Method

  • Place 50g of melted butter and popcorn kernels in a pot. Cover tightly and place on medium heat and pop for two minutes.
  • When the popping slows down, take off the lid and let the steam out. Set aside the popcorn.
  • Heat a pan on medium heat and combine the rest of the melted butter with the gula Melaka and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Add the salt and stir well. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  • Pour the caramel into the pot of popcorn and stir until all the popcorn is well coated with the caramel.
  • Dig-in and enjoy!
