Shrek, the big baby with a sneaky side

Just as there are two sides to a coin and a story, Shrek the ginger cat had two contrasting personalities that Liyana said livened up the atmosphere at home.

One side was clingy and affectionate, while the other was mischievous and devious.

“He liked to follow my mother and me everywhere we went. He would run circles around our feet before we went up the stairs, begging us to pick him up and cradle him,” Liyana tells FMT.

His unique name was inspired by his eating habits at home, especially when it came to his favourite meal of fried chicken.

“Ever since he was little, he ate like an ogre. Hence, the name Shrek!”

As much as Shrek was enthusiastic about his food, he was also very serious about showing that he cared. He was always the first to rush to the door to greet Liyana when she came home.

While this might have thrilled any owner, Liyana suspected that this was a ploy on Shrek’s part, as he probably wanted to sneak out of the house.

Due to this bad habit of his, Liyana said that the entire family had to keep a close eye on him as they were worried that he would not be able to fend for himself out there should be get lost.

“It made us so anxious because he didn’t know how to look for water and food.”

In fact, Shrek was so bad at staying outdoors that he wouldn’t even answer nature’s call when he was outside.

Liyana recalled how once, when the front door was accidentally left open, Shrek had run out. He remerged days later not only ravenous but also desperate to have a pee.

The first thing he did upon reaching home was run to the litter box and not the food bowl.

Still, Liyana cared deeply for this naughty little ginger despite his misdemeanour.

Liyana recalled that whenever Shrek was not busy asking to be pampered, he would find delight in terrorising the other house cats, ambushing and wrestling them to his heart’s content. His sibling, Smoky, was his partner in crime.

“Smoky and Shrek were good friends; they were as thick as thieves! They were constantly grooming each other.”

This memory took a sad turn when one day, out of the blue, Shrek disappeared. He was six years old at the time.

“We lost him during the MCO period. We think he snuck out during dusk and never returned. We looked everywhere, but he was nowhere to be found,” said Liyana regretfully.

“After Shrek went missing, Smoky would go around looking for him at his usual hangouts and start meowing. This went on for a while.”

Although Shrek is no longer in Liyana and her family’s lives, Liyana says that they still look back at his spoiled and mischievous ways, and how he truly loved being in people’s arms.

No matter what and wherever he may be, Shrek will always be their baby.
