Frozen treats for your furry friend to beat the heat

With many people cooped up at home these days because of the pandemic, there’s no escaping the blistering heat.

The hot and humid 32°C weather now is forcing many to take frequent showers or hole themselves up in cooler parts of the house.

But what about your pets? Sure, they are without clothing by nature but they must be boiling underneath all that fur, right?

Help your companions feel a little more comfortable with these quick, classic and fool-proof treats!

All you need is a freezer, some fruits and a little time (which you probably have a lot of these days).

Fruit and Yoghurt Pupsicles

The easiest treat to whip up for your pup. (Pinterest pic)

Ingredients

  • 240 ml plain or Greek yoghurt, avoid those with artificial flavours or sweeteners
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 1 cup sliced banana
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Popsicle mould or ice cube tray
  • Optional: peanut butter
  • Long and sturdy dog treats

Method

  • Blend all the ingredients together and add a little water if needed to achieve a pouring consistency.
  • Pour the blended mixture into a popsicle mould or an ice cube tray.
  • Stick individual dog treats in the mixture, which will act as edible ‘handles’.
  • Place the tray in the freezer so the mixture can solidify. The pupsicles will be ready in a few hours.

Tip: Other dog-friendly fruits include apples (without the core and seeds), blueberries, mangoes (without the pit), peaches and pears. Get creative with your combination; your pet will love it!

Frozen Watermelon Treats

Watermelon is also a good source of hydration. (Gone to the Snow Dogs pic)

Ingredients

  • A quarter watermelon, seedless
  • 350ml Greek or plain yoghurt
  • Ice cube tray mould

Method

  • First, puree watermelon chunks until smooth.
  • Then, add one tablespoon of Greek or plain yoghurt into each ice cube tray mould before filling them with the watermelon puree.
  • Once done, freeze for at least four hours and store in an airtight container in the freezer.
  • If you have more watermelon available, blend it with coconut milk to make the perfect slushie for your doggie.

Tip: You can also spend some time bonding with your pet over plain slices of watermelon. After all, food tastes better when you eat it with your friends.
