6 fascinating things to do if you had one day in Taiping

A serene view of Taiping Lake Gardens.

Taiping is a small city in the state of Perak, Malaysia. Despite its city status, Taiping has a small-town vibe about it, thanks to the lush backdrop of Bukit Larut or Maxwell Hills and the laid-back lifestyle of its people.

When one mentions Taiping, many automatically think of Taiping Lake Gardens. But is that all?

If you have at least one day in Taiping, where would you go? Surprisingly, there is quite a bit to see and do here.

1. Have a jog at Taiping Lake Gardens

Fallen trees are preserved in Taiping Lake Gardens, not chopped up and discarded.

If your time in Taiping is limited, a jog around the Taiping Lake Gardens is a must.

What differentiates it from other lake gardens in the country is the breathtaking rainforest trees here. They are hundreds of years old and are considered icons of Taiping.

In other cities, when a tree falls, the city council chops it down, but the Taiping council does its best to preserve them.

In fact, a few years ago, a section of the road in the gardens was closed to motor vehicle traffic to preserve the trees. The lake gardens are also a favourite place for movie producers to shoot movies.

2. Visit Taiping Zoo and Night Safari

Taiping Zoo is close to the city, not far from the lake gardens. The zoo also has a night safari to watch the nocturnal species when they are awake.

It is considered one of the best zoos in the country with a four-star review in Google from 9,000 reviewers.

3. Off-roading on an ATV

Go off-roading on an ATV for an adrenaline rush.

Adventurous types who are looking for an adrenaline rush, can go off roading on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

At the ATV Adventure Park here, you can explore lush jungle trails. The friendly staff of the adventure park are on hand to make sure no one gets lost, acting as guides on this adventure.

4. Taiping War Cemetery

The War Cemetery is where the fallen from World War II are buried.

The Taiping War Cemetery is a must-stop to reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen.

The way to the ATV park passes through the cemetery, where those who died during World War II are remembered. It has a calmness to it, especially when the mist rolls in from the hills.

5. Bukit Larut (Maxwell Hill)

A jog up Bukit Larut is a great cardio workout.

Another place to visit on a day in Taiping is Bukit Larut. This old British hill station is one of the best places to cool down when the weather gets unbearably hot and humid.

It is cool up here due to the elevation and the lush greenery. Walk up, jog up or hop on a jeep to the top. Bukit Larut is also famous for being the wettest spot in Peninsular Malaysia.

6. Mural hunting

There are no fewer than 10 murals in the city.

Apart from Georgetown, Shah Alam and Gopeng, Taiping too has amazing street art. The interesting thing here is that it depicts Taiping’s history and historical events involving the city.

For instance, there is a mural of Amelia Mary Earhart, the first woman aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

The famous aviator, who went missing during a flight to circumnavigate the globe in 1937, actually stopped to refuel her plane at Tekah Airport in Taiping.
