Pantua was adopted from Lost Animal Souls Shelter soon after Srimayee Sen Sarma set-up home in Malaysia.
“We were new in Malaysia and while my husband went to work, I was alone at home. I needed a companion and what better than a pet?
“We were against buying so we started looking online for adoption,” Srimayee says, adding that she knew in an instant that Pantua was the one for her the moment she laid eyes on the cute pup.
“I saw Pantua’s picture on a website and immediately fell in love. She was called Misty then and was all of two months old. We named her Pantua after a sweet dessert in Bengali,” Srimayee explains.
Pantua was very shy when they brought her home initially. “She refused to come close to us but when we were out of sight, she’d come looking for us only to scoot off when we tried to approach her,” Srimayee says.
However, over time, Pantua warmed up to her new parents and settled nicely into her new home. In fact, she couldn’t get enough of them and wanted to spend every moment, even the nights, in their company.
“My husband put her to bed every night but she would come and sleep in front of our bedroom door,” Srimayee says with a tinge of sadness in her voice.
But like all teething puppies, Pantua would chew almost everything she came into contact with. Her favourite was Srimayee’s slippers.
“She would chew up my slippers and try to steal my footwear all the time. And that was not all – she even chewed up the TV remote one day as well as the phone chargers,” Srimayee says.
Pantua was a voracious eater from the time she was a tiny puppy and according to Srimayee, she still is. “She loves to eat human food and begs for it all the time.”
Very affectionate and lovable, Pantua loves being with her family and if she could have things her way, she would never want them to leave home ever.
“She gets so happy when we come home and would cry every time we leave our place. She loves belly rubs too but hates taking showers. Her other love is going for walks and begging for treats,” Srimayee says.
A quick learner, Srimayee says they potty-trained Pantua themselves. “We trained her ourselves to pee and poo in the toilet and she has been a very good learner.”
