Olive is a cream-coloured Long-Haired Miniature Dachshund who tends to fall immediately in-love with everyone she lays eyes on. She came to Suyin Tung and her family at about 10 weeks old and has been with her for a month.
Suyin says that despite watching video after video about dogs and puppies, nothing could prepare her for the real thing.
“It took Olive about five days to settle into a routine and to love her playpen, and I went without a good night’s sleep for about four days.
“We made it so that she would sleep in the living room at night instead of in our rooms, to prevent possible issues with separation anxiety in the future,” Suyin says.
However, this meant putting up with Olive’s relentless whining throughout the night for one week.
“She is one of the most affectionate puppies we’ve ever had, never hesitating to go up to anyone who comes over and flipping over on her back. There’s also nothing she loves more than climbing onto someone’s lap and falling asleep, especially on cool days.
“She is able to sleep through thunderstorms, vacuum cleaners going by, and even when we have shouting matches while playing Overcooked.”
Suyin says Olive’s intelligence is also something that came as a shock to her, since the little puppy is able to pick up tricks after only being taught them once or twice.
Olive’s favorite toys include plush toys, chew sticks, and all the door-stoppers in the house.
“When she first came to us, she couldn’t care less about toys and was only interested in food, but as she started getting more comfortable and opened up to us, she would play with anything she could get her paws on.”
Olive also loves nothing more than to run around the house, following Suyin from room-to-room; but if there’s one thing she hates, it’s her harness.
“Putting on her harness is like switching an ‘off’ button on a Roomba, because she tenses up in an instant and flops onto the floor like a fish.
“When we take her places, which we do quite frequently, we never have to fuss about getting her into her carrier. The moment she sees us take out her bag, she’s up and ready to go, and will readily walk into it.”
Suyin says that if there is one thing she is hugely proud of, it’s how well behaved Olive is when she’s outside.
“She’s never barked, cried, or showed any signs of aggression, but this could be due to her being too young to realise what’s going on around her.”
Olive’s favorite snacks include baby carrots, blueberries, and ice cubes, but she will pretty much eat anything she is able to fit into her mouth. Her favorite time of the day is undoubtedly her meal times.
“She gets extremely impatient when it comes to food, and starts jumping at the sight of her food bowl. This is something we’re looking to curb, since jumping isn’t good for a Dachshund’s already-weak spine.
“Olive has been one of the best additions to our family in a long time, and even though the first week was rough and our hands and feet have teeth marks on them, I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Suyin says.
