Meet Kimmy, the five-year old white-as-snow tom-cat who showed up as a wee little kitten from out of the blue at Brenda Poh’s apartment one day.
Describing him as a “white fluff of happiness”, Brenda says she wanted to adopt him on the spot but there were already five other kittens in her home and her dad was firm about not taking in another.
“He would follow us like a kid-bodyguard from the carpark, into the lift up to our front door every time,” Brenda says, adding that since she couldn’t keep the kitten, she fed him regularly. And named him Kimmy.
Then one day, tragedy struck. “Dad rushed frantically back home, exclaiming that Kimmy was lying motionless on the street,” Brenda says.
They rushed to the spot, only to find poor Kimmy barely breathing and with huge swelling over his right forepaw. “He looked critically ill so we rushed him to the vet,” Brenda says.
The veterinarian drained the abscess by making an incision and Kimmy spent a few days at the clinic recuperating. Before long, Brenda says, Kimmy was back to his active and playful self, and fit enough to be discharged.
Because his wound needed dressing, Brenda’s mum became his “nurse”. Strangely enough, Kimmy developed a strong attachment to Brenda’s dad.
“I suppose that made my dad soften up to him, and before we knew it, Kimmy became the latest addition to our family of cats.”
Brenda says Kimmy is a cheeky tom-cat. “He loves to play and cuddle. If you lie down beside him, he’ll climb over you and sprawl out on your body and purr in contentment,” Brenda says.
“Unlike the other cats, he actually responds to his name, rushing to us excitedly when we call – how intelligent!”
Unable to sit still for long, Kimmy is always finding something to play with. “He’s a hyperactive cat. He tries to engage the more senior cats but always ends up annoying them instead,” Brenda says, laughing.
With strong hunter instincts, Brenda says Kimmy keeps trying to drown the toy mouse they bought him by dropping it in puddles of water in the bathroom. “Not bad, eh?”
A sweet-natured cat (well, apart from killing the toy mouse), Kimmy is happy to share his cooked fish with his housemates. He also loves cat kibbles, Brenda says, adding he’s generally quite a greedy fella.
“He often attempts to climb the table during dinner time. Owh Kimmy! But we can’t resist his cute face and end up sharing our fish with him.”
Unlike most cats who flee at the sound of a vacuum cleaner, for Kimmy, it’s the sound of rustling plastic bags. “This is because when he was a stray, a stranger tried to catch him with a plastic bag. Poor kitty is still traumatised by that incident,” Brenda says.
She says that Kimmy is unlike most other cats in that he is super friendly. “He isn’t arrogant like the others. In fact, he’s the friendliest among them. He’s also an attention seeker, always brushing his body against ours while purring loudly.
“Sometimes, when you place your hand slightly above his head, he’ll stand on his hindlegs just to headbutt your palm. How sweet is that?” Brenda says.
When it comes to sleeping arrangements, Kimmy has the run of the house. “He does not have his own bed or pillow and is happy to curl up in any spot that takes his fancy.
“I guess you could say the whole house is his bedroom, most often the living room sofas and the dining area. Sometimes, of all the places, you will find him snoozing in the toilet sink!”
