PETALING JAYA: An accident in heavy rain last night near the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway construction site caused speculation on social media of a repeat mishap just a day after a concrete slab fell off the parapet, crushing a passing car.
The speculation prompted highway concessionaire Prolintas to deny there was any link between last night’s accident and SUKE.
Prolintas said police were investigating the case as one of hit-and-run.
The accident, in Taman Bukit Cheras, is believed to have involved a car and a private crane that was passing through the area, where construction of the elevated highway is taking place.
Photographs posted on Facebook showed damage to the car from the impact of the collision, which led to speculation that another mishap similar to that on Saturday had occurred. According to preliminary information, the driver was not injured and was extricated by firemen.
Prolintas said the accident was under investigation by police and was classified as a hit-and-run case. FMT is seeking confirmation from police.
The company appealed to social media users not to share false reports linking the accident to SUKE and to await official statements before passing comment.
Work on the SUKE project has been halted by Prolintas and a stop-work order was also issued by the authorities pending an investigation.
Yesterday, Works Minister Fadillah Yusof said workers had strengthened the SUKE highway parapet, with work completed at 5am, and checks had been conducted to ensure its sturdiness.
He said the Malaysian Highway Authority and Prolintas had been instructed to recheck designs and construction that involve risks to the public before work on SUKE was resumed.
