Obviously, people invest in air conditioners in order to live and sleep in cool comfort. But sometimes all the unit does is to blow out hot, musty air.

The thermostat is ramped down to the lowest it can go and the fan speed is put on full blast but nothing helps.

Here are five of the most common reasons for this.

1. The unit is old

Sometimes, the unit is just too old to keep up. Parts wear down and lose efficiency, providing less and less cooling power over the years.

As these parts break down, the air conditioner loses function. Older units, strained beyond capacity, will also overheat and cause warm air to blow.

Besides, older technology just does not measure up to newer, improved air conditioners.

If a unit is outdated, the best bet is to get a new one. However, regular maintenance and servicing can help prolong the life or an air conditioner.

2. The compressor is malfunctioning

The compressor is the component that controls the cooling and circulation of the air. A faulty compressor will disrupt the distribution of properly cooled air into the home.

Air conditioner compressors can malfunction due to general wear and tear, but neglecting regular cleaning and maintenance will cause it to fail more quickly and more often.

3. Low refrigerant level

Chemical refrigerant allows the unit to cool air, so if the level is low, the air conditioner will not work properly.

4. The air conditioner is dirty

The obstruction reduces or completely blocks airflow, while internal blockages cause the cooling mechanisms to stop working altogether.

5. Thermostat is on the wrong setting
