5 likely reasons why the air-cond is blowing hot air

Obviously, people invest in air conditioners in order to live and sleep in cool comfort. But sometimes all the unit does is to blow out hot, musty air.

The thermostat is ramped down to the lowest it can go and the fan speed is put on full blast but nothing helps.

Here are five of the most common reasons for this.

1. The unit is old

Sometimes, the unit is just too old to keep up. Parts wear down and lose efficiency, providing less and less cooling power over the years.

As these parts break down, the air conditioner loses function. Older units, strained beyond capacity, will also overheat and cause warm air to blow.

Besides, older technology just does not measure up to newer, improved air conditioners.

If a unit is outdated, the best bet is to get a new one. However, regular maintenance and servicing can help prolong the life or an air conditioner.

2. The compressor is malfunctioning

The compressor is the component that controls the cooling and circulation of the air. A faulty compressor will disrupt the distribution of properly cooled air into the home.

Air conditioner compressors can malfunction due to general wear and tear, but neglecting regular cleaning and maintenance will cause it to fail more quickly and more often.

It should be repaired by a professional, but some faults cannot be fixed and it would have to be replaced.

3. Low refrigerant level

Chemical refrigerant allows the unit to cool air, so if the level is low, the air conditioner will not work properly.

Low refrigerant levels are more often than not caused by leakage, which can be remedied by getting in an expert to fix the unit.

Refrigerant leaks can be dangerous to air quality and the family’s health. Apart from the unit blowing warm air, a leak can be detected by listening for hissing bubbling noises.

4. The air conditioner is dirty

Dust and dirt build-up in filters, fan blades and internal components causes blockages that reduce the unit’s efficiency.

The obstruction reduces or completely blocks airflow, while internal blockages cause the cooling mechanisms to stop working altogether.

Generally, prevention is better than cure.

If the unit breaks down because regular cleaning has been neglected, contact a maintenance service to fix the problem and give the unit a much-needed deep clean.

5. Thermostat is on the wrong setting

The most benign reason is that the thermostat setting is wrong. Perhaps the “cool” setting has been switched off so the air conditioner is blowing ambient, warm air.

Or maybe the blades have been fixed into a position that is diverting the cold air. Or perhaps the air conditioner has been switched to “warm” rather than “cool”.

Refer to the manual for instructions on how to set the thermostat, or check the manufacturer’s website.

Regular maintenance and servicing will help keep air conditioners running longer, catch problems early on before they get worse and ensure everyone gets cool, fresh air they deserve.
