Working with electricity is extremely dangerous especially without the expertise or the right tools.

It can endanger the person doing it as well as the home’s electrical system.

The best prevention of accidents and damage is being cautious when handling anything electrical.

1. Do not use the circuit breaker as an On-Off switch

Switching the circuit breaker off and on too often causes damage. (Family Handyman)

The function of a circuit breaker is to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit.

It actually causes a little damage each time the circuit breaker is switched off and on.

Shutting it off once in a while is not an issue, but repeatedly flipping the switch can cause an electrical hazard.

It is fine, and makes perfect sense, to switch it off if the family is going on a long holiday, but switching it off frequently for short trips will damage the breaker.

2. Always handle cords or plugs with dry hands

Never, ever touch plugs or electrical cords with wet hands. (Rawpixel pic)

Everyone is taught from a young age never to handle electrical plugs or cords with wet hands. It can result in the person getting electrocuted.
It is simple science.

Water acts as a conductor of electricity, so it travels along the water to the person holding the plug.

Do not touch a plug if the cord is wet or one is standing in water.

Carefully remove the cord from the water and make sure the cord and the floor are completely dry before plugging it in.

3. Pull on the plug, not the cord

Pulling out a plug with the cord can damage the connection to the plug and fray of the cord. Hold the plug instead and lightly pull out. (Rawpixel pic)

A common mistake is pulling on the cord when disconnecting a plug from the socket. This can put excess stress on the wire and damage the connection of the cord to the plug or cause the cord to fray.

A power cable or plug that is damaged or frayed should be discarded and replaced as soon as possible to prevent accidents. Avoid handling any cord or plug that has exposed wiring.
