PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Trades Union Congress president Abdul Halim Mansor said the government must end the country’s dependence on foreign workers in order to get Malaysians back to work.
He said this was more important now as a Statistics Department report showed job cuts in every sector.
The Labour Productivity of Second Quarter 2020 report showed that total employment fell 2.4% compared with the first quarter – a loss of 359,000 jobs.
Halim said the government needed to compel companies which prioritised “profit over the nation” to hire Malaysians.
“Foreign workers often do not receive EPF, they will work for less money, they are cheaper,” he said, calling on the government to limit their numbers in the workforce.
“The government must ensure there’s enough protection for the local workers, and enforce a ratio of locals to foreigners that’s 10-1.”
He said the government must look at jobs usually filled by foreign workers and find ways to encourage local participation.
“In Singapore, you see many Malaysian’s working 3D jobs (dirty, dangerous, difficult), so why can they work there and not here? It’s the pay, so we need to study our pay scales because we are not giving our workers enough.”
Chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin has forecast that work would return to normal if Covid-19 restrictions were to be removed.
