Things we unknowingly do that damage the home

Everyone has bad habits, but some can be more harmful than one would think.

Here are some bad habits that need to be broken to prevent damage to the home.

1. Slamming doors

Repeatedly slamming doors can loosen the hinges and cause misalignment in the door jamb. (Rawpixel pix)

Slamming the door shut is one way to relieve anger and frustration but it will not help win an argument.

Repeatedly slamming doors can loosen the hinges and cause misalignment in the door jamb.

Spare the door some pain and oneself some money fixing a door that cannot close anymore.

2. Using the doorknob as a hanger

It is okay to hang a shirt or two on a doorknob for a moment, but don’t make it a permanent clothes hanger. (Rawpixel pix)

The doorknob seems like the perfect place to hang clothing, especially when space is tight and one does not want to crease that freshly ironed shirt. It is fine to hang a shirt or two on it for a short while, but don’t make it a habit.

Overloading the doorknob with extra weight causes strain on the knob and even the hinges of the door. Once again, it can cause misalignment and the doorknob could turn into a permanent clothes hanger.

3. Failing to clean filters

All filters, be it in the kitchen sink or the air conditioning, must be cleaned regularly. (Rawpixel pic)

It does not matter whether it’s the filters on the kitchen sink or the air conditioning, they all need to be checked once in a while and cleaned.

A dirty kitchen sink filter can mean disgusting germs and bacteria getting on the dishes when they are washed in the sink.

But what’s equally as bad is that the gunk can potentially clog the drain pipes, which may mean the trouble and expense of calling in the plumber.

Neglecting the air conditioning filters can cause the unit to overheat or not cool efficiently. The air conditioning should be serviced once a month and the filters cleaned to keep it functioning properly.
