On a recent trip to Penang, some late afternoon tea-time noms seemed in order. The choice was the non-halal Prawn Mee at Lebuh Presgrave and it does always go down a treat, so why not?
Lebuh Presgrave is also known as “3rd road” in Hokkien or Mandarin, as it is the 3rd road from Jalan Magazine, which was considered the “first road”. This goes down all the way to 7th road, but such details are not really important.
The Prawn Mee (known as Hokkien mee in Penang), is locally referred to as 888 Hokkien mee. It is a house converted into a coffee shop with the anchor tenant being this big Hokkien Mee and Loh Mee stall.
Operations start at 4.30pm, and there is usually quite a long queue in front of the stall. It goes like this – line up, order, get the food, pay, eat.
Like many food stalls in Penang, in addition to the standard bowl of Prawn Mee or Loh Mee, there is a list of optional ingredients to add, in addition to the usual sliced pork, prawns, noodle, egg, bean sprout, fried shallots and even lard. Intestine and roast pork were the choices du jour.
Unfortunately, the pork ribs were not ready yet, bummer. Apparently, pork skin is also available from time to time.
The verdict? Well, it isn’t as famous as it is and popular for nothing. The soup was on point (try the mixed broth) and everything was just right.
Those bits of lard certainly contributed to the overall taste. It was that wholesome feeling that harks back to childhood. Definitely worth a repeat visit.
