The things people do can have different consequences, some positive, some negative.

Many of the things people do in the kitchen can be extremely unhealthy.

Here are some examples.

1. Defrosting meat on the countertop

The safest way to defrost meat is in the fridge, microwave oven or a cold-water bath. (Pixabay pic)

This is something most people do on a daily basis. The main issue with defrosting the meat on the countertop is that it is left out at room temperature.

Harmful bacteria can multiply even quicker at room temperature, meaning the longer you leave the meat out to defrost the higher the chances of it being colonised by bacteria.

The safest way to defrost meat is to leave it in the fridge, placing it in cold water or using the defrost setting on the microwave.

Food that has been defrosted in the microwave should be cooked immediately after.

2. Rinsing meat in the sink

Rinsing meat is not only an ineffective method to clean it, it also spreading germs in the sink. Raw meat can contain bacteria and pathogens, by rinsing the meat in the sink no germs are being killed.

The kitchen sink and other items that get splashed by the water are being contaminated.

To kill bacteria and pathogens, cook the meat thoroughly, it is as simple as that. But, those who still feel the need to rinse meat, make sure to sanitise the sink afterwards.

3. Not washing hands

Washing your hands is easily one of the most important things to do, especially now.

Make sure the hands are washed when starting the cooking and in between as well, for example, before touching anything else after touching raw meat, to prevent the spread of bacteria.

4. Only using one cutting board

Using one cutting board for everything can cause cross contamination and serious illness. (Pixabay pic)

Using the same cutting board for raw meat and ready-to-eat food such as fruit and vegetables is a big no-no. Juices from the meat can easily contaminate the fruit, and one can get seriously ill.

Use different cutting boards for different food, one for ready-to-eat food and another for raw meat. You can label them or get ones that look different or are in different colours.

5. Not cleaning the kitchen regularly

Last but not least, this is easily the biggest mistake many make by simply ignoring this chore.

Germs and bacteria are living organisms that can evolve and adapt in order to survive, and by not cleaning the kitchen regularly they are being given the opportunity to live and multiply in the kitchen.

This can be very dangerous because food is stored and prepared in the kitchen to be consumed by others. Clean the kitchen on a regular basis.
