Akiko was a tiny puppy when she was spotted whining and pacing anxiously by the roadside late one Saturday night. Saddened by the sight of the nervous pup, Kaanchana Rika Kumar and her family decided to pick her up.
She was groomed and vaccinated in the following days and was finally brought back to live in her forever home.
Since then, Akiko, now called Kiko for short, has lived a charmed life. Being the baby of the family, she is pampered no end by everybody in the family.
Kiko is now seven years old although you’d never guess as everyone still treats her like a new puppy who just walked into their lives.
Her papa buys her snacks every single morning. Throughout the day, others in the family spoil her with treats, morsels of meat and sometimes even rice, apart from her usual twice daily meals.
“Well, one can just imagine what Kiko’s weight must be like, right? She walks with her tummy swinging from right to left,” Kaanchana says, laughing.
“This little queen also grabs every opportunity to get a belly rub and to snuggle up in the warm arms of anyone willing to hold her.”
She may be spoiled rotten but Kiko is one smart cookie. “This sneaky girl only performs tricks if she’s guaranteed a treat for her efforts.
“She also knows how to fix those adorable eyes on us when she wants something. Needless to say, we cannot resist her sweet face and give in to all her whims and fancies.”
Being a bit of a diva, Kiko is unlike other dogs in that she does not find playing “catch” or “fetch” amusing in the least bit. She prefers lounging in the sun to get her daily dose of Vitamin D.
“Although Kiko can be naughty at times like when she dashes out the gate and goes missing for hours on end, she is still the sweetest, most lovable puppy on earth,” Kaanchana says.
“She never fails to cheer us up with her sassy and adorable ways after a busy day at school or at work, or whenever one of us is feeling down.”
Kiko may not be of thoroughbred stock but she is sharp as a whip, always quick to catch rats or chase frogs.
When she isn’t sharpening her hunting skills, Kiko likes to chill with her family’s friends who drop by to play with her. “She is good natured and will never snap or growl at anyone. She’s adorable in that way,” Kaanchana says.
While she’s gentle with friends, she’s ferocious with foes. “She barks furiously at the gas man, postman or any stranger who shows up at the gate.
“She’ll charge from the backyard with all her hackles up, barking ferociously when she sniffs a stranger nearby. I think she’s given some of them a real fright of their lives.”
A few years back, Kaanchana says, Kiko heroically warned the family about a snake that was curled up near the back door.
“She began whining and barking hysterically. We took one look at the snake and quickly called for help. Thank God a guard nearby helped us with it. But the real hero was Kiko – she saved the day!”
Kaanchana adds, “This little piece of heaven has changed our lives since the day she arrived. We love her immensely and nothing on earth can ever change that.”
