5 steps for a virus-free home

The risk of person-to-person transfer of viruses is higher than transmission via surfaces, but it is still important to clean. (Rawpixel pic)

The important thing to know is that cleaning and disinfecting are two different things.

Cleaning is about removing contaminants from a surface while disinfecting is about killing pathogens. It is essential to do both if anything or anyone has entered or exited the home.

While transmission from person to person has a higher risk than transmission via surfaces, it is still essential to clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces in your home on a daily basis.

This is especially important if people are leaving and returning for goods or work.

1. Focus on high-touch surfaces

Depending on the type, Covid-19 can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. On plastic and stainless steel, the virus can live for two or three days. So it is important to clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces such as:

  • Doorknobs
  • Table surfaces
  • Hard dining chairs
  • Kitchen counters
  • Bathroom counters
  • Taps and tap knobs
  • Toilet seats and handles
  • Light switches
  • TV remote controls
  • Game controls
  • Desk surfaces

First of all, clean the surfaces, remove any contaminants, dust or debris. Wipe them with cleaning spray and a hand towel.

Next, apply a surface-appropriate disinfectant. The fastest and simplest way to do this is with disinfecting wipes or disinfectant spray.

If disinfectant is not available, use whatever soap or cleaning agents are around the house.

2. Wash clothes with detergent

Washing clothes with normal detergent and drying at a higher temperature is sufficient to disinfect them.

Remember to disinfect surfaces that the dirty laundry comes in contact with, including the hamper and hands.

Last but not least, do not forget to clean coats and backpacks.

3. Disinfect packages and mail

While there is a relatively low-risk of transmitting the virus, it is better to disinfect packages and mail with wipes. Remember to wash hands after and properly dispose of the packaging.

4. Disinfect mobile devices and laptops

It gets tricky when it comes to disinfecting mobile devices. Use disinfecting wipes to wipe the screen, buttons and anywhere dust can get trapped.

Remove the case before cleaning underneath. Laptop displays are made from either glass or plastic, so different disinfecting methods may be necessary.

For a glass display, use a disinfecting solution and a soft towel to clean the screen. Remember to wipe the keyboard, trackpad, the exterior and other sections of the laptop.
